An apparatus for laying pipe into a trench includes a number of independent hollow V-shaped members having fixed side walls which converge from an upper end and are joined at a lower end. The V-shaped members are linked by lines which are adapted to permit limited relative side to side movement and vertical movement as the lower end of the V- shaped members moves along a bottom of a trench and the side walls follow a path defined by sides of the trench. An entry guide is positioned at the upper end of a first of the V-shaped members. An exit guide is spaced from the lower end of a last of the V-shaped members. A trailing earth cover member is adapted to pull earth from the sides of the trench onto the pipe, whereby the pipe is covered by a protective covering of earth prior to backfilling of the trench occurring.
