ABSTRACT Apparatus for determining the level of fluid in an opaque vessel is described. An impulse device is arranged to impart mechanical vibrations to the vessel wall. These vibrations are picked up as they decay by a transducer. The vibrations are more seriously damped when there is more rather than less fluid in the vessel and this is used as the basis for obtaining the fluid level. The transducer converts the mechanical vibrations to electrical oscillations which are processed to determine the frequency content and, possibly also for greater accuracy, the amplitude content. In general the lower the frequency the higher the fluid level. The apparatus may be provided in a fixture on which the vessel is supported or may be provided in the form of n hand carried pistol which can be applied to any part of the vessel.
