An apparatus for measuring concentrations of radon in water contains a radon accumulating coating in the preferred form of a carbon vapour layer on an etchable substrate. Preferably this is produced by vaporizing carbon onto the surface of the plastic film. This coated film is used to accumulate radon concentrations by immersing it in water. The presence of radon is thereafter detected by a counting of the alpha particle tracks which may thereafter be etched on the substrate surface by an etching solution after removal of the coating. The coated film of the invention may be used to effect ground water surveys to determine the discharge areas of ground water and the locations of faults and fissure openings in bedrock by the presence of radon at such locations. This, in turn, makes it possible to conduct monitoring for earthquake prediction.
