An apparatus for measuring the speed of hockey shots comprises (a) a simulative puck to be propelled by a person by means of a hockey stick, this puck being propelled from an initial position toward a given direction, (b) a carriage/track assembly for guiding the propelled puck along a predetermined trajectory, and (c) a computer system for measuring the speed of the propelled puck moving in the given direction along the predetermined trajectory. The computer system comprises a keyboard for selecting a wrist shot or a slap shot. This computer system further controls rotation of a pivotal lever from a first angular position in which the lever is retracted from the shooting surface to enable propelling of the puck from its initial position by means of a slap shot, to a second angular position in which the lever protrudes over the shooting surface. In the second angular position, the lever forms a mechanical obstacle situated in the proximity of the initial position on the side of the puck opposite to the given direction in order to prevent a person having selected a wrist shot to use a slap shot to propel the puck and increase the speed of his shot.
