ABSTRACT The temperature of the surface of a body, such as a continuously cast strand, is measured by apparatus comprising an axially hollow shaft of substantially cylindrical shape, and means for optically scanning the said surface through the inter- ior of the shaft. The scanning means is optically connected with a pyrometer. The rear end of the shaft is connectible to a con- trol motor for rotating or oscillating the shaft about its axis. The front end of the shaft has a head supporting scrapers for cleaning the said surface and has a peripheral groove receiving a locking ring. The head is removable, axially hollow, and coaxial with the shaft. The scrapers project from its front face. Arms substantially parallel to the axis of the shaft pro- ject from the rear face of the head and are received by longi- tudinal slots in the shaft. The arms have such a configuration that, when the rear face of the head is positioned against the front face of the shaft, the free ends of the arms are disposed with play in the longitudinal slots and have external overall radial dimensions greater than the internal dimensions of the locking ring and are at a greater distance from the front end of the shaft than is the locking ring.
