ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE : Apparatus for melting and refining raw copper and blister copper. It comprises a shaft furnace provided with a lock chamber feeder for charge material and a hearth furnace for refining copper. The shaft furnace and the hearth furnace constitute a unit of construction and the shaft furnace is mounted on the hearth furnace in such a manner that when the apparatus is charged, a copper pile is formed which is sup- ported on the bottom of the hearth furnace and slopes at least toward that portion of the hearth furnace which is disposed out- side the projection of the shaft furnace. Burners are provided between the shaft furnace and the hearth furnace and are adapted to be directed toward the slope of the copper pile, the hearth furnace being provided with parts of the apparatus which are required for the metallurgical treatment.
