ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus for monitoring the amount of particulate material, especially tobacco, being conveyed in a stream thereof, comprising material-contacting means mounted so that it extends across the stream of material in contact with the surface thereof and is free to rise and fall with changes in the depth of the stream, and means for detecting movement of said contacting means caused by such changes, the contacting means having projections by which movement of the stream causes the contacting means to rotate. Suitably the material-contacting means comprises a freely rotatable roller (12) with surface ribs (13) extending across a conveyor (3) for the stream of material and supported by counter-balanced arm means (8, 14) fast upon a pivot (7) concentric with a transducer (6) responsive to angular rocking motion of the pivot due to changes in the depth of the stream. Movement of the roller towards the conveyor is limited by adjustable stop means (19) engageable by the arm means (8, 14).
