TITLE APPARATUS FOR MONITORING REFRACTIVE INDEX CHANGES IN FLUIDS INVENTOR Jacques P. Legendre ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The apparatus for monitoring refractive index changes in fluids includes an optical fiber with one end forming a probe for contact with the fluid to be monitored, a source of optical energy to be directed into the fiber from the other end and a device for detecting reflected light from the fiber probe end. The probe end of the fiber has a planar surface normal to the axis of the fiber. The refractive index discontin- uity between the probe end surface and the fluid causes a portion of the optical energy transmitted through the fiber to be reflected back through the fiber. The reflected optical energy which is detected, is directly related to the refractive index of the fluid.
