ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: Sodium metal concentration in a flow of amalgam is continuously monitored as function of electromotive force generated by the amalgam with the use of a reference elec- trode consisting of a mercury-sodium amalgam of which the sodium concentration is known, a solid electrolyte of beta-alumina being interposed between the two amalgams. The invention is particularly applicable to mercury-chlorine cells. A unique probe comprising the reference amalgams and solid electrolyte is also disclosed.
