A plug-type aircraft door is operated by two power assist door operating mechanisms or drives and a door operating handle that is also an electric switch which provides input signals to an electronic door control unit. Each door operating drive has its own electric motor connected to a control output of the electronic door control unit to receive motor control signals in response to the input signals from the door handle and switch. The door handle and switch form a unit which is so constructed that manual operation of the door handle, when the door is closed, first mechanically releases a door locking safety. Thereafter the switch causes the energizing of one electric motor for unlatching and lifting the door, and then causes the energizing of another electric motor for swinging the door open. These controls are performed by the control unit in response to respective door handle switch positions. When the door is open and the door handle is operated in the opposite direction, the sequence is reversed, whereby the door is first closed, then lowered and latched and then locked by the door safety.
