- 1 - Abstract In an optical information storage apparatus information is read from a magneto-optical storage medium by exploiting the self-coupling effect of a semiconductor laser. The invention is characterized in that a Faraday rotator is disposed in an optical path along which reflected light from the magneto-optical storage medium returns to the semi- conductor laser. The polarization rotation angle of the Faraday rotator is selected so that the polarization plane of the semiconductor laser oscillates depending upon the perpendicular magnetization direction of the magneto-optical storage medium. A linear polarizer is interposed between the laser and a photodetector whereby to detect a polarization component parallel or vertical to the junction plane of the laser by means of the photodetector. The result is erasable and rerecordable data in the storage medium with a much improved signal to noise ratio over prior art methods.
