The device has a supporting cannula, namely a relatively short shaft (12), made of malleable, resilient material, which can be shaped in the form needed by the open surgery. A flexible catheter with ablating electrodes, namely a distal member having a flexible region (116) is introduced in the cannula and looped with its operative element (20) around the roots of the pulmonary veins, and kept there by a pull wire anchored at the tip of the operative element forming a noose.
