A patient-support apparatus (10) includes a base (12), a patient-support deck (14) having a longitudinal length and a transverse width, and a deck- positioning assembly (16) coupling the patient-support deck (14) to the base (12). The patient-support deck (14) is supported with respect to the deck- positioning assembly (16) for longitudinal movement. The deck-positioning assembly (16) includes an actuator (76) having a first portion (78) and a second portion (80) that moves transversely relative to the first portion (78). The deck-positioning assembly (16) includes a transmission assembly (82) configured to convert transverse movement of the second portion (80) relative to the first portion (78) into longitudinal movement of the patient-support deck (14) relative to the base (12).
