A source of power for the hydraulic system of an automobile carrier. The source of power comprises an auxiliary engine which is preferably supplied with fuel from the main engine fuel tank whereby the auxiliary engine is free of a fuel tank so that it may add less weight to the carrier. This also eliminates the necessity of replenishing a separate fuel supply from time to time. In order to reduce maintenance costs as well as allow use of the main engine fuel tank on carriers having a diesel main engine, the auxiliary engine is preferably diesel. In order that the auxiliary engine may be free of a radiator so that it may add even less weight to the carrier, its cooling system is preferably connected to the main engine cooling system in such a way that the main engine radiator may be effectively used for cooling auxiliary coolant. This also allows one engine to keep the other non-operating engine warm.
