ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus for pre-processing sensor data which express measurements of a varying physical property of a material (2) which is under inspection during production or processing thereof. A ratiometric A/D converter (12) sequentially receives data from a sensor such as a CCD image sensor contained in a camera (6). The A/D converter (12) is in communication with an addressable memory (22) which stores pairs of reference data associated with each pixel in the CCD array. The reference data pairs are communicated through two D/A converters (32,34) as inputs to the A/D converter (12) in a sequence corresponding to the sequence in which the A/D converter received associated pixel data. The A/D converter (12) is selected so that each output thereof has a magnitude that is determined by the magnitudes of the triad of data corresponding to a pixel datum and its associated pair of reference data.
