Successive groups of stacks of paper sheets are delivered onto the upper reach of an impermeable conveyor belt which is thereupon caused to advance the groups sideways onto another conveyor. In order to prevent deformation of stacks during starting of the conveyor belt, the latter is temporarily coupled with a pusher which is adjacent the rear side of the adjacent last stack of the group to be advanced onto the other conveyor. The coupling can be designed to establish a pneumatic connection between the impermeable belt and the pusher, and such connection can be terminated as soon as the acceleration of the group of stacks to a selected speed is completed. The pusher is thereupon retracted to a starting position.
