An apparatus for preventing whiplash related injuries has a support member (14) adjustably supported within the seat (12) of a vehicle, and adapted to be moved upwardly or downwardly relative to a passenger in the seat. A frame (16) is supported on the support member and located behind the cranium and cervical spine of the passenger. A layer of resilient material (18) is supported on the frame (16), and defines a supporting surface (20). The supporting surface defines a contour that corresponds to the posterior contour of the passenger's cranium and cervical spine. The supporting surface is therefore adapted to simultaneously decelerate the cranium and cervical spine during a vehicle collision and, thus, prevent whiplash related injuries to the passenger.
L'invention se rapporte à un dispositif qui sert à prévenir le traumatisme cranio-cervical dit ''coup du lapin'' lors d'une collision et qui comprend un élément de support (14) fixé réglable dans le siège (12) du véhicule et destiné à se déplacer vers le haut ou vers le bas par rapport au corps du passager assis dans le siège. Une membrure (16) est maintenue sur l'élément de support, à l'arrière du crâne et de la colonne cervicale du passager. Une couche de matériau de rembourrage (18) est fixée à la membrure (16), de façon à former une surface d'appui (20). La surface d'appui présente un profil qui correspond au profil postérieur du crâne et de la colonne cervicale du passager. La surface d'appui ainsi conçue sert à produire une décélération simultanée du crâne et de la colonne cervicale du passager lors d'une collision et à lui éviter ainsi un éventuel traumatisme cranio-cervical dit ''coup du lapin''
