Abstract of the Disclosure The disclosure relates to apparatus for printing and applying pressure sensitive labels. The apparatus has a frame, a support for supporting a supply roll of pressure sensitive labels carried on web of supporting material, a platen and a cooperable print head mounted by the frame, a delaminator for delaminating labels from the supporting material web, an applicator for applying the delaminated labels, a driver in contact with the web downstream of the delaminator for feeding the web to the delaminator, a mechanism for driving the web driver and the print head, and a break for contacting the web downstream of the supply roll and upstream of the platen for applying a braking force to the web to prevent the web from being paid out of the supply roll as a label is being applied to an article. The brake comprises a brake member movable between two positions. The brake member is out of braking contact with the web in one position and in braking contact with the web in the other position. Spaced-apart abutments move the brake member between the two positions so that the brake member is in the one position while the driving means is driving the web feeding means and the brake member is in the other position upon completion of operation of the driving means.
