Abstract of the Disclosure The disclosure is directed to an apparatus for providing an indication of fluid flow through a fluid metering device of the type in which motion or position of a permanent magnet, internal to the (sealed) fluid metering device, is related to fluid flow. Operation is by means of sensing, through the housing of the fluid metering device, the external magnetic field of the permanent magnet. Sensing is accomplished by a sensor means, secured to the fluid metering device. The sensor means typically comprises one or more coils, or windings, on a core of magnetic material. An ac excitation current, supplied to an excitation winding, produces an alternating magnetic intensity (H) in the magnetic material. Under the influence of the external field of the permanent magnet, nonlinearities in the magnetic material produce, in a pickup winding, a first electrical signal that is related to the position of the internal permanent magnet. Also disclosed is a detection means, which includes electronic circuitry for rectifying the first electrical signal to produce a second electrical signal that is indicative of fluid flow. Typically, the detection means produces a pulse, or a voltage transition, each time a magnetic pole of the permanent magnet moves by the sensor means. These pulses, or voltage transitions, can then be counted to provide an indication of cumulative fluid flow through the fluid metering device.
