A computer is programmed in accordance with an algorithm which allows it to send a series of tentative unique initialization commands to a port which should be connected to a modem for the purpose of establishing what type of modem is connected if any. In accordance with an internal flag setting, an appropriate translation table is then used in any future communications with that modem to convert the basic commands used by the computer operated device to commands that will be recognized by the modem in setting up communications with other modems at the other end of a transmission line and for terminating said communications. The algorithm involved is also able to ascertain whether or not an operable modem is connected to a port by monitoring the responses obtained. Thus, modems can be changed and potential technician error is eliminated due to the dynamic selection capabilities of the computer programmed to operate in accordance with the inventive concept algorithm.
La présente invention fait état d'un ordinateur programmé avec un algorithme lui permettant d'envoyer une série de commandes d'initialisation préliminaires uniques à un port, auquel un modem devrait être connecté, en vue de déterminer si un modem est branché et, le cas échéant, son type. Une table de conversion est sélectionnée en fonction d'un indicateur de réglage interne. Elle servira à toutes les communications subséquentes avec ce modem afin de convertir les commandes de base du dispositif commandé par l'ordinateur en commandes qui seront reconnues par le modem lors de l'établissement de communications avec d'autres modems situés à l'autre extrémité d'une ligne de transmission. La table de conversion servira également à mettre fin à ces communications. En fonction des réponses obtenues, le présent algorithme peut également déterminer si un modem en état de fonctionner est connecté ou non au port. Ainsi, il est possible de changer les modems et d'éviter les erreurs que pourrait commettre un technicien grâce aux capacités de sélection dynamique de l'ordinateur programmé pour fonctionner avec cet algorithme de concept innovateur.
