ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Medium consistency cellulose pulp is pumped utilizing an eccentric screw pump rotor, including pulp with a consistency of about 10% and a freeness of at least about 700 ml CSF. An elongated feed screw, having a helical flight, is attached by a coupling to an eccentric screw pump rotor within a housing containing the feed screw and rotor. The housing has a transition adjacent the coupling, preferably a stepped transition. The feed screw includes a hollow tube portion surrounding the coupling so that the coupling does not provide an obstruction to slurry being conveyed by the feed screw toward the rotor, and the hollow tube portion also includes a thickened section of the helical flight and a number of agitator pins which prevent the pulp from compacting at the transition.
