ABSTRACT An apparatus for working on a workpiece, as for example drilling or punching it, comprises a conveyor for displacing the workpiece in a longitudinal transport direction into a working station. A tool slide is displaceable in a transverse direction toward and away from the station and carries at least one tool engageable with the workplace. A sensor has a pair of sensor heads which can be moved on a sensor slide toward and away from the workpiece to determine the exact position in the transverse direction of the workpiece relative to the tool slide. The drive for the tool slide is connected via a controller to this sensing arrangement to ensure proper positioning or repositioning of the tool slide before each working operation, to compensate for transverse shifting or deformation of the workpiece.
