The separator is provided in a column (1, 27, 28) between two beds of particulate material (4, 5, 9, 10, 13, 14, 19, 20) for example of ion exchange resin to prevent mixing of the particulate material (4, 5, 9, 10, 13, 14, 19, 20). The separator contacts the side wall of the column (1, 27, 28), against which it can slide.
