16 ABSTRACT: The apparatus ensures that locking-in to the track (25) of a record carrier (1), for example a com- pact disc, is effected at the most eccentric point (28) of a circle (27) described by the light spot P, which is projected on the record carrier by a light beam via an objective system (8), when the record carrier rotates and the objective system is stationary. In this point the relative radial speed of the light spot P with respect to the track is minimal, so that locking-in can be effected in the simplest way at this instant. The radial position- ing means (77) are switched on at this instant under the influence of a first control signal (S1), which is applied to a lock-in system (78). Moreover, locking-in to the track at this most eccentric point (28) has the advantage that even if the objective system is in its initial posi- tion, which means substantially against the stop it remains possible to follow the track even after the first complete revolution of the record carrier after locking- in so that no loss of track occurs. This would be pos- sible in the case of locking-in to the track of an eccen- tric record carrier at a point other than the above- mentioned point.
