ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus for reading optically detectable signals recorded on a record carrier, the apparatus having a laser light source for transmitting a coherent beam of light in an optical path from the laser light source to the record carrier; a hologram element is formed by the recording of an inter- ference fringe pattern established between reference and diverging light beams, with the diverging light beam diverging from a convergence point to interfere with the reference light beam; a holder for supporting the hologram element in the optical path of the coherent light beam so that the hologram element focuses the coherent light beam on the recording carrier and the focused coherent light beam is modulated in response to the signals recorded on the record carrier; and a photo-detector is disposed in a predetermined optical path traversed by the modulated light beam from the record carrier for detecting the intensity of the modulated light beam received thereby.
