ABSTRACT Provided herein is a method and system for reducing air pollution and smog created by internal combustion engines such as automobiles; as for example removing particulate, gaseous contamination and positive ions. The physiological effect is to balance ionic air charges from a previous detrimental positive ion state to the more beneficial negative ionized state. Positive ions are known to be detrimental to health. Previous state of the art devices for reduction of pollution such as air injection systems, engine modifications, spark timing controls, exhaust gas recirculation, catalytic converters, crankcase emissions and fuel system evaporation devices do not demonstrate an ability to reduce the presence of positive ions both inside and outside of the exhaust system. The effect of this invention is to reduce air pollution by the action of an intensive electrical field or radiation so as to cause electrostatic precipitation of airborne particulate and chemical transformations in the exhaust system and in the general atmospheres out of the exhaust system; so that a benefit is the altering of air ions to be substantially negatively ionized when leaving the exhaust system of internal combustion engines. The apparatus can include an array of high voltage ionizing corona discharge needles, wire grids, or photoionization devices and other parts as would constitute the body of the apparatus.
