ABSTRACT According to this invention, tape tension variations between supply and take-up spools are reduced using fixed guides for the tape. These guides are located in the tape path between the turn-around idlers and the tape rolls. The guides are positioned to create tape tension variations which are opposite to variations in the tape head span, thereby providing a cancelling effect. Reducing the tape tension variation reduces the amount of tension necessary to maintain a working tension for contact with the transducing head, thereby decreasing head and tape wear and increasing tape life.
