A data storage system has a disk cartridge (10) with a rotary inner shell (16) to permit access to a medium (14). The cartridge comprises a latch (37) disposed on an edge of the cartridge for locking the cartridge in a closed position. A flexible lever (60) in the data storage device (50) is adapted to engage and unlock the latch during cartridge insertion. The lever, having a spring portion (60b), flexes away from the cartridge as it is further inserted into the data storage device.
