APPARATUS FOR REMOVING PITCH FROM THERMALLY CRACKED GAS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: An apparatus for removing particles of pitch from a thermally cracked gas, comprising a demister having a number of bubble-cap trays arranged above a number of sieve trays inside the demister body. The lower surface of the lowermost bubble-cap tray is spaced above the upper surface of the uppermost sieve tray by a distance at least twice as great as the spacing between the sieve trays and a nozzle is provided below the lowermost sieve tray for injecting a hot cleaning oil upwardly against the lowermost surface sieve tray. The cracked gas is passed upwardly through the series of trays and out of the top of the demister. Particles of pitch in the gas are removed by the trays, and the spacing of trays and jet of cleaning oil allow the pitch to be removed from the gas with high efficiency without the apparatus becoming fouled with the pitch.
