Apparatus for raising and lowering a sash (14) relative to the frame of a sash window. The apparatus comprises a t least one first pulley (34) for fixed attachment to the sash, at least one second pulley (36) for moveable engagement with the sash, a cord (44) which passes around and away from the first and second pulleys for attachment to a fixed point on the window frame (18), for operably linking the position of the sash relative to the window frame to the position of the second pulley(s) relative to the sash, and driving means (58) for moving the second pulley(s) relative to the sash, to thereby raise and lower the sash relative to the window frame.
