ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus for screwing together pipes provided for the casing of a borehole. The apparatus comprises a screwing-clamp device and a counter device which engage respective ones of two pipes to be screwed together. The screwing-clamp device and counter device are carried on a common support structure by means of a mounting arrangement which includes compensation elements for enabling relative displacement of the two devices during screwing together of two pipes. Such relative displacement is required both due to the axial movement of the pipes during this process and due to eccentricities unavoidably present in the overall set up. The compensation elements used to compensate for axial movement of the pipes take the form of hydraulic operating cylinders. Preferably these cylinders are used to adjust the height of a support plate carrying the screwing-clamp device.
