APPARATUS FOR SECURING A RAIL TO A TIE Abstract of the Disclosure Railroad rails are held in a fixed position on railroad ties by improved apparatus which prevents the rails from working free of the ties. The apparatus generally comprises a tie plate member having a generally flat bottom surface portion for abutting supportive engagement with a tie disposed longitudinally of and beneath the tie plate member, and a top surface portion having a channel therein disposed transversely of the tie plate member for receiving support flange portions of a rail, the tie plate member having at least two innermost passageways therethrough located next adjacent the channel, the innermost passageways defining a retaining flange portion having a downwardly facing abutment surface for abutting engagement with an upwardly facing abutment surface of an innermost spike means in a final assembled position thereof, the tie plate member further having at least one outermost passageway therethrough located laterally outwardly from the innermost passageways; means for resiliently cushioning and sealing the tie plate member relative to the tie; innermost spike means having a shank portion, a head portion on one end of the shank portion, the head portion having a downwardly facing abutment surface for engagement with a support flange portion of the rail to secure the rail to the tie plate member, and a flange portion on an intermediate portion of the shank on a side of the shank opposite the abutment surface on the head portion, the flange portion having an upwardly facing abutment surface for abutting engagement with the downwardly facing abutment surface of the retaining flange portion of the tie plate member when the innermost spike means is mounted in an innermost passageway and extended into the tie and the tie plate member is shifted transversely relative to the tie; and outermost spike means adapted to be mounted in the outermost passageways for securing the tie plate member to the tie after the innermost spike means have been mounted in the innermost passageways and the tie plate member has been shifted transversely relative to the tie to prevent lateral displacement of the tie plate member relative to the rail and the tie. -2-
