ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus for reducing the sand content of tarsand, comprises a vessel, a hydraulic dredge mounted on the vessel and having a cutter head for granulating clumps of tarsand and suction means for conveying tarsand, a buffer tank for receiving and storing material conveyed by the dredge, at least one separating hopper for reducing the sand content of tarsand, the hopper being adapted to receive a substantially constant supply of a water-tarsand mixture from the buffer and a separator for separating water and fine sand particles and/or sludge from bitumen, the separator being arranged to receive liquid overflow from the hopper and froth from the buffer compartment and having a water discharge opening and a bitumen discharge opening.
