ABSTRACT An apparatus for separating liquid feed mixtures into two fractions by means of semipermeable membranes abutting against membrane supporting plates assembled in a stack and mutually spaced to form membrane channels. Permeate ducts intersect the stack of membrane supporting plates, membranes and section separating plates, if any, in the area of the membrane surface situated between the inlet from the feed channel and the outlet to the concentrate channel. The structural elements acting as spacers may form part of the permeate ducts. The stack of membrane supporting plates, membranes and section separating plates may be placed in a pressure vessel with a distance between the stack and the wall of the pressure vessel to Form a feed or concentrate channel. In the stack each individual membrane channel decreases preferably continuously in the flow direction.
