APPARATUS FOR SHAKING FISH FREE FROM GILLNETS, LONGLINES AND SIMILAR FISH CAPTURING MEANS ABSTRACT Apparatus for shaking fish free from gillnets, longlines and similar fish capturing means as such fish capturing means are hauled aboard a fishing vessel so as to disentangle fish individually snared on such fish capturing means and to permit such freed fish to fall into the hold of the fishing vessel or into other suitable fish collecting and/or processing means. More specifically, the present invention pertains to simple, compact, rugged apparatus having a minimum number of movable parts, yet which is capable of imparting violent shaking motion to fish capturing means as such means are drawn aboard a fishing vessel. Because of the simple, compact construction of the shaking apparatus, it can be installed on a fishing vessel in a wide variety of positions to accommodate a wide range of operating conditions. for example, the shaking apparatus can be located on the deck of the fishing vessel and oriented transversely to a gillnet or the like so as to guide and spread the gillnet as it is hauled aboard the vessel for storage upon a winch drum or other suitable storage device. Alternatively, the shaking apparatus can be mounted on the vessel in general alignment with the direction of movement of the fishing net as it is hauled aboard; an arrangement which is particularly advantageous when working with deep nets--i.e., nets having a span from cork line to lead line of up to thirty feet, or more--since such an arrangement readily permits the net to be draped over the shaking apparatus as it is hauled aboard. Moreover, the shaking apparatus can be positioned on the vessel in such a manner as to permit the net to be shaken as it is hauled aboard to thereby disentangle a catch of fish, with the net then being immediately passed back -1- overboard for further fishing operations rather than being stored on a winch drum or the like. The simple, compact nature of the apparatus readily permits the apparatus to be moved from one to another of the foregoing operational positions as operating requirements change. In the preferred forms of the invention, the shaking apparatus includes a convexly shaped support surface--e.g., a convex eye--so as to permit a gillnet or the like to be shaken while it is maintained in a spread convex configuration, whereby fish caught by the gills on the upper surface of the convex net are shaken loose and are free to slide laterally over the downwardly sloping edges of the net and into the hold or other fish collecting and/or processing means on or in the vessel. The various alternative forms of the invention readily permit of either a simple, substantially vibration-free, up-and-down shaking motion or, alternatively, a more complex shaking motion wherein the fishnet is simultaneously oscillated from side-to-side and reciprocated up-and-down.
