ABSTRACT The invention relates to a device for sorting cutlery designed for it to be inserted in the device unsorted and taken out sorted. The device is characterised by a feed-in unit (1) with a container (8) into which the unsorted cutlery can be poured and means (9) with the help of which it is taken unsorted out of the container; a separating unit (2) with means (10,11) for separating the pieces of cutlery taken from the feed-in unit (1) from each other and arranging them in sequence one behind the other; a read-off unit (3) including on the one hand a moving conveyor belt (12) to which the separating unit (2) is arranged to deliver the pieces of cutlery in sequence one after the other, and on the other hand a pulsator (13) and an optical unit (14), with the conveyor belt (12) having a width which is considerably less than the length of the cutlery, the pulsator (13) emitting pulses at a tempo related to the belt speed, and the optical unit (14) including a light source (32) and opto-electronic means (33) for reading off the contour of the cutlery; a sorting unit (4) with sorting means (20, 25, 26), by means of which the cutlery is brought to a receiving container intended for each piece of cutlery; a return unit (5) in which unidentified objects are separated from the sorting device or returned to the feed-in unit (1); a manoeuvre unit (7) which is coupled to a computer unit (6) and also provided with manoeuvre means (70) for control of the computer unit; and also the aforesaid computer unit (6) which is linked with the manoeuvre unit (7), the pulsator (13), the opto-electronic read-off means (33) and with the sorting unit (5), with the computer unit being arranged so as to register signalisations of the read-off contours of the cutlery, to compare these signalisations with programmed signalisations and also, depending on the outcome of the comparison, to influence the appropriate sorting means (20, 25, 26) in the sorting unit (5).
