Contiguous rows of shortbread slices and the like food products exiting an oven on a belt conveyor are spaced apart at regular intervals by an apparatus comprising two parallel belts trained around respective pulley pairs, a plurality of rods mounted between the belts and extending transversely to the direction of advance of the food products on the conveyor, a corresponding plurality of blocks mounted slidably on the rods and provided with fingers adapted to engage the food products, and means of spacing apart the blocks on each rod at the working run of the belts and means of approaching the blocks at the return run.
