A platform adapted to be carried by a tractor or other loading vehicle is provided with a hydraulically powered spike for drilling a hole in the ground beside a transplanted tree or other plant requiring support. An operator on the platform is provided with a supply of bamboo stakes and inserts one in each hole as the apparatus moves successively from one plant to the next in a layout such as a tree farm. The apparatus makes it possible to set out many more bamboo stakes per day than with conventional hammering-in of stakes, or pre-drilling of holes to insert support poles.
