ABSTRACT The invention is concerned with an apparatus for storing and moving a drill pipe having an annular recess at each of upper and lower portions thereof, to a position in alignment with the axis of a drill hole. The apparatus of the invention is adapted to be mounted to a mast and comprises mutually parallel upper and lower arms of equal length each pivoted at one end to the mast, and a pipe rack pivoted to the other end of each of the arms and forming therefore a parallelogram with the arms and mast. Upper and lower clamping means of similar construction provided with clamps are mounted respectively on upper and lower portions of the rack, each clamping means being driven by separate drive means for opening and closing the clamps, the clamps engaging the annular recesses of the drill pipe. The apparatus further includes a fluid pressure ram means pivoted to the mast and to one of the arms of the parallelogram, for moving a drill pipe to a position in alignment with the axis of the drill hole and returning the drill pipe to the initial storage position, and a catch for holding the apparatus in the initial position.
