-25- APPARATUS FOR STORING, MIXING, AND USING MEDICATION ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Medication which is stored dry or in a concentrated liquid form, and which must be mixed with a diluent before use, is stored in a medication container which has an opening for transferring medication to and from the container. A sealing member over the container opening has an elongated passageway extending through it to permit flow of material to and from the container. A removable closure in the passageway prevents flow of material until the medication is ready for use. A tapered connector on the sealing member surrounds the passageway, and is adapted to receive a mating tapered connector on another container into which material may be transferred from the container after removing the closure from the passageway. A medical injector includes a cylindrical vial having an open end and a closed end. A resilient plug is press- fitted into the open end of the vial so a liquid diluent can be stored in a sterile condition in the vial. An elongated barrel includes a sealing member at one end, and the sealing member has a passageway extending through it. An elongated cannula is connected at one end to the passageway. The other end of the cannula terminates in a scarf in the vicinity of the plug. A threaded fitting on the other end of the barrel receives mating threads on one end of the plug extending toward the barrel. The vial and cannula are first held in an assembled, but nonoperating, position when the threaded barrel is coupled to the plug. Upon further interlocking of the plug with the barrel, the scarf end of the cannula pierces the plug so liquid in the vial can flow through the cannula and out the passageway in the sealing member. A tapered connector on the sealing member and around the passageway is adapted to receive a mating tapered connector on the -26- medication container so that material can be transferred back and forth between the vial interior and the container by reciprocating the plug in the vial.
