ABSTRACT An apparatus for carrying and transporting loads with a support plate and an air cushion device includes a flexible damping ring which is adapted to be inflated with a supply of a pressure medium and which is secured sealingly to the support plate along a circular line of contact, and a buoyancy chamber formed between the support plate, the inflated damping ring, and the surface supporting the apparatus; the chamber of the damping ring comprises at least one aperture through which it communi- cates with the buoyancy chamber whence, in the operating condition, the pressure medium emerges between the damping ring and the supporting surface, forming a fluid film; the part of the damping ring wall which forms the lateral partition in the buoyancy chamber is expandible, whereas the remainder of the wall is only slightly, or not at all, expandible. A further configuration, provides for a ring to be secured centrally, within the damping chamber, at the same distance from the support plate, the radius of the free outer edge of the ring being equal to, or greater than, that of the circular line of contact between the damping ring and the said support plate.
