APPARATUS FOR TAPING CARTONS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus for applying sealing tape to a forwardly traveling carton includes a first projecting tape applicator unit which lies in the path of carton travel. As the carton strikes the first applicator unit, tape is applied to the carton front end panel, the traveling carton depressing the applicator unit to allow such unit to apply and wipe tape around the corner formed by the front end panel and onto a horizontal carton panel, i.e., a top or bottom carton panel. A push finger carried on the tape applicator unit engages for a time during the depression of such unit with a tape cutter but on engagement of the push finger with a cam near completion of unit depression travel, is caused to disengage from the cutter and releases same to sever a tape length from the tape supply roll, a roller in the depressed applicator unit wiping the severed tape length along the horizontal panel for the predetermined length that the tape extends along the horizontal panel. A second tape applicator unit which moves from projecting position to depressed position in tandem with the first unit is located downstream of the first applicator unit. As the traveling carton moves beyond the first applicator unit, the depression constraint thereon releases so that the second applicator unit tends to project and tape from a second supply roll is applied to the carton horizontal panel starting some distance spaced from where the first tape length ends on such horizontal panel, this last applied tape being applied around the corner formed by the carton horizontal panel and rear end panel, a second cutter operating to sever this second tape length from its roll supply with roller means being employed to wipe the tape against the carton horizontal and rear end panels. In another embodiment of the apparatus, taping at the front and rear of the cartons in the afore- described courses is accomplished with feed from a single tape stock, and a cylinder unit is operable to assist in release of the first cutter for cutting the tape length that is applied to the carton front end.
