ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: An apparatus for the continuous electrolytic refining and extraction of elements and compounds including metals, metalloids and alloys, comprises a tanks an electrolyte, contained within the tank; cathode means; anode means; first transfer means for supporting and moving the cathode means along a predetermined path between one end of the tank and an opposite end of the tank, the cathode means being at least partially submersed in the electrolyte between the ends of the tanks and second transfer means for supporting and moving the anode means along a path within the tank which is parallel to the predetermined path of the cathode means. Each submersed portion of the anode means moves in a direction of travel opposite the direction of travel of an adjacent portion of the cathode means, between the ends of the tank, the anode means being at least partially submersed in the electrolyte. The apparatus of the invention allows a higher current density to be maintained, and a high quality deposit on the cathode means. It also prevents irregular or dendritic growth of the electrode deposit, thus permitting a lower concentration of additives foe preventing such irregular growths, and increasing the efficiency.
