In an apparatus (10) for the direct or indirect application of a liquid or pasty medium (12) to a material web (16), in particular of paper or board, the medium (12) is brought into contact with the material web (16) or the surface of a mating roll in an application chamber (44). The application chamber (44) is bounded on the inlet side by a sealing doctor device (32) and on the outlet side by a metering doctor device (34), as referred to the running direction (L) of the material web (16). Furthermore, the two doctor devices (32, 34) are arranged on a carrying beam (20). According to the invention, the two doctor devices (32, 34) can be fixed to an essentially rigid supporting unit (26) provided on the carrying beam (20).
