Abstract of the Disclosure A source (10) is capable of generating acoustic signals underwater at high cycling rates for providing seismic signals having controlled amplitude and spectral shape at precisely timed intervals for marine geophysical exploration. The source (10) has a pair of radiating pistons (12, 14) slidingly mounted within a cylindrical sleeve (40) having radial webs (44, 46). Axial shafts (90, 92) extend outwardly from the piston (12, 14) and support the pistons (12, 14) in the webs (44, 46). The pistons (12, 14) and sleeve (40) define a first chamber (84) between the pistons (12, 14), which, under static conditions, contains a low pressure gas. The shaft (90) on at least one piston (12) extends into a second chamber (120) in the hub of a web (46). Pressurized hydraulic fluid applied to chamber (120) via a valve (150), causes the pistons (12, 14) to execute cycles in which they are first reset, then released to move towards each other to an impact position because of the ambient hydrostatic head. Upon impact, they rebound away from each other due to the mass-spring system defined by the pistons (12, 14) and the compressed gas in the first chamber (84). The spring-mass system serves to cushion the impact end to shape the acoustic signal. A control system (202, 231, 232) responsive to the acoustic signal, detects the impact of the pistons and provides precise control of the timing and duration of each operating cycle so as to generate acoustic signals having a desired amplitude and repetition rate. After impact, the pistons are outwardly reset for the next cycle. High cycling rates are possible because unwanted acoustic transients are absent.
