Disclosed is an apparatus for the intermittent storage and controlled feeding of volatile fuel components present in the unfilled space of a fuel tank into the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine, wherein a shutoff valve is positioned in a vent conduit which extends through a sensor and an absorption element into the intake manifold of the internal combustion engine. The sensor is positioned in the conduit for production of a first signal which is proportional to the mass flow through the conduit. An auxiliary arrangement produces a record signal for the operation of the shutoff valve, which second signal quantitatively corresponds to the valve position. The auxiliary means compares the first with the second signal and an auxiliary device indicates deviations of the first signal from the second signal. The fuel volatiles are thereby kept under control so that the stress on the environment caused by harmful substances emitted by the internal combustion engine is clearly reduced.
