Apparatus for the manufacture of an obliquely pleated material strip (2b), includes a pair of intermeshing toothed rolls (10a, 10b). A material strip (2a) consisting of a foil-like material and supplied obliquely to the roll axes can be folded in zig-zag-like manner. In accordance with the invention the teeth (12) are parts of movable bars (120) which are axially displaceable in grooves (13) of a roll body (11). Guide means (14, 15) for the bars (120) are provided in such a way that, as a result of a compulsory guidance of the bars, the material strip (2a, 2b) can be transported during processing on a spatially fixed path.
