ABSTRACT An apparatus for the recuperative preheating of cold air, more particularly fresh air, fed to a lime shaft kiln or the like, such as an annular or double inclined kiln, by trans- ferring heat from the air, more particularly the waste gas, heated in the lime shaft kiln, with a recuperator comprising a chamber, or the like, traversed by a plurality of heat exchange tubes, in which the hotter waste gas flows through the heat exchange tubes, while the cooler fresh air flows through the chamber surrounding them, in which a preliminary recuperator, having a chamber traversed by heat exchange tubes or the like, precedes a main recuperator comprising the heat exchange tubes traversed by the waste gas, the waste gas flowing through the chamber and the cold air flowing through the heat exchange tubes.
