The invention relates to a method for monitoring the condition of a downhole pump in fluid communication with a production tubing, comprising: providing a conduit having a distributed temperature sensing optical fiber cable disposed therein; winding a portion of the conduit at least once around the production tubing proximate the location of the pump; and using the distributed temperature sensing optical fiber cable to monitor a change in temperature of the conduit as a function of the condition of the downhole pump. The invention also relates to an apparatus for monitoring the condition of a downhole pump in fluid communication with a production tubing, comprising: a conduit wound at least once around the production tubing proximate the location of the downhole pump; a distributed temperature sensing optical fiber cable disposed within the conduit; wherein the distributed temperature measurement of the optical fiber cable is indicative of the condition of the downhole pump.
