ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus is provided for the removal of oil from an effluent stream consisting of a dispersion of oil in water The main feature of the apparatus is a plurality of socks through the walls of which the effluent stream passes; the socks being of a fibrous material, preferably a melded epitropic fabric, which causes coalescence of the dispersed oil droplets The coalesced oil floats to the surface and can be conveniently removed by, for example, a sludge gulper.
